San Andrés

The seven-color sea — island calm, duty-free, and reef diving

A Colombian island 775 km offshore (closer to Nicaragua than the mainland), San Andrés is the country's Caribbean escape — famous for the "Sea of Seven Colors," reef snorkeling around Johnny Cay, duty-free shopping, and a creole culture that fuses Colombian, Caribbean, and English-speaking Raizal roots.

Must-do experiences

  • Johnny Cay — sandbar, snorkeling, fresh fish lunch
  • Sea of Seven Colors — best viewed from La Piscinita / West View
  • Cueva de Morgan (pirate lore + cliffside cavern)
  • San Luis beach — quieter alternative to the main strip
  • Reef diving + freediving — 40+ sites around the island
  • Island loop drive by golf cart or scooter

When to visit

December-April (dry, less wind) — avoid October (peak rain)

Safety

Very safe, tourist-oriented. Stick to guided snorkel tours — currents around Johnny Cay are stronger than they look.
